What I do outside Scouting....

I enjoy the great outdoors whether that's walking the dog, climbing a hill, cycling or the occasional bit of skiing. I am married to Kate and we have a daughter Jenni, a whippet called Dora and two cats Gilbert and Maisie. I work as a GP.

Why I got involved with Scouting...

I was a Scout in my childhood and enjoyed the whole experience. It is remarkable how much you learn as a Scout and how useful the practical aspects can be in future life. I was introduced to Nigel at a barbeque and we chatted about Scouting. A further chance meeting on a sailing holiday in Greece and I was soon signed up/press-ganged into the 159th.

What I do outside Scouting....

Outside of Scouting, like so many people, I balance work and family life. I love hill walking and kayaking and whenever possible I will go out into the Scottish hills. To be honest I spend more time walking the dog in Pollok Park than I do summiting a Munro, but that will all change when I win the lottery!

Why I got involved with Scouting...

I got involved in Scouting as I enjoy working with young people within the local community; Scouting is an ideal way of doing this. Here in Scotland we have such a great opportunity to explore some of the most beautiful landscape in Europe and through Scouting we can offer young people a chance to experience the outdoors and do things that they perhaps would not otherwise do. Last September 5 Scouts slept out under the stars in a light shelter and had a ball; they will never get to do that anywhere else and my role as a Scout leader is to make those opportunities happen, in a safe and challenging environment. Scouting should be different from school and other activities that boys and girls of that age do.

What I do outside Scouting....

I am a General Dental Practitioner with practices in Govan and Knightswood in Glasgow. I have previously been involved in Vocational Training of new dental graduates since 1993 but I do not have a Trainee this year. I also work for the Glasgow Emergency Dental (out of hours) service once a fortnight in the Glasgow Dental Hospital.

In my free time I enjoy skiing, cycling, badminton and DIY.

Why I got involved with Scouting...

I became involved with Scouting became I was asked if I could help out as the section was short of leaders I was happy to do this because I had enjoyed Scouting myself as a teenager and also because my son was in the Cubs at the time. I always found that in the Scouts the games were great, we were slways building things with ropes and staves, learning Scouting skills including making fires, cooking and camping outdoors. Generally great fun all round and I hope that I can pass the knowledge and sense of achievement that I had onto all of our Scouts.
